Getting things done

July 27, 2009 Leave a comment

I have such good intentions when I have a project I’d like to work on, but too often the project never gets completed.

I think there are two possible reasons for this:

  1. I have a weird perfectionist tendency: I plan and plan because I want the result to be perfect, but the thing that I plan doesn’t happen because I don’t come up with the perfect plan.
  2. At other times, I’ll come up with the plan, but I won’t implement it because I’ve spent so much time on the planning. In effect, I just peter out.

I’d like my solution to be, “Just do it!”

Online versus paper

July 15, 2009 Leave a comment

I’m so undecided about the “best” way to do some things. For example, should I put my calendar, to-do list, etc. online? Should I put my recipe book online? Should I do my Bible study online?

I must admit, I enjoy the physical act of writing. However, I do realize that hand writing things is much more time consuming than typing (for me, anyways)—which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Also, I can easily make corrections/modifications on the computer, whereas with writing I either make a big mess (scratching things out) or I have to erase, erase, erase. I actually prefer writing with pens much of the time, so I guess I’m thinking more of the aesthetic thing… But showing changes and modifications isn’t necessarily a bad thing, either…

I’ll include more about my thoughts regarding online versus paper in future posts.

Upgrading to Microsoft Office 2007

July 6, 2009 1 comment

About a couple of months ago at this writing, I finally decided to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007.

Back in the old days, I would be so eager to try new software that I would install it almost immediately. Not this time! Why was I so resistant to change? Is it because I’m such an old fogey? I finally decided that, for various reasons, I should just jump in and “do it.”

I’m finding Office 2007 to be rather different from 2003, so I’m still in the process of learning how to use the new versions of the various software applications. There are some nice additions, and there are some things that are just irritating to me. There’s some functionality that I’m not sure I’ll ever use (but I do like to get to know my software). Also, some of my old keyboard commands [yes, I’ve been using keyboard commands for many, many years--I am an old fogey!] have changed, so either I have to remember the key combinations (without seeing the options onscreen) or I have to learn slightly modified ones.

I was going to insert a list here of the things I’m having to retrain myself on, but it would take too long.  :)

Oh well. Such is the nature of progress, I suppose. I’m sure that, as I have with previous versions, I’ll grow to know and love this software… until it’s time to upgrade again.
